Reed is a concept lower limb prosthetic which utilizes the abilities of the complex fiber structure of bamboo nodes. It features vibrational damping abilities, load bearing compression strength, while also being lightweight in comparison to the current titanium or carbon fiber prosthetic designs.

This rendering is a representation of the internal structure of the prosthesis which our group conducted mechanical testing on. It is a scaled up and simplified version of the bamboo node structure which would be interspersed within the length of the prosthetic device.

FUNCTIONAL DECOMPOSITION

The basis for this project was that the biological solution for a perpendicular interface is similar across species. Our group discovered through secondary research that the Moso bamboo node fiber orientations and structures are incredibly similar to that of the human meniscus. The sources can be found below:
